Narrative

Three brothers came from Bridport, England and settled in the counties of Dinwiddie, Lunenburg, Charlotte, and Mecklenburt, in the Colony of Virginia. Their names were William, John, and Thomas Baker Stembridge.

This is the lineage of William Stembridge, as we have found it, in published books, court records, and family traditions. He is thought to be the oldest of the three brothers. Records show that he lived in Dinwiddie County until 1784; he then moved to Lunenburg County, Virginia, where he died. His will was probated on 24 Jul 1787.

First generation information provided by Morton Howard Stembridge, Baltimore, Maryland (now deceased).

"WILL OF WILLIAM STEMBRIDGE, LUNENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINA, 1787"

In the name of God, Amen. I, William Stembridge, of the County of Lunenburg, seriously considering the uncertainties of human life at the best, and more particularly my, in my old age, and also cawling to mind that it is appointed for all men to die. I do while in sound state of mind make this my last will and testament.

First: I leave my body to be decently buried, and my Soul to the Author of it's being, and as for my worldly goods, both real and personal, I leave in manner and form as follows:

Item: I give and bequeath to my Daughter Sally Stembrige, the best bedstead and furniture whre-on I commonly lie, the chest formerly cawled my wife's chest, to her, and to her heirs forever.

Item: I give unto my Daughter Elizabeth Stembridge my Wife's side saddle, to her and to her heirs forever.

Item: It is my will and desire that my other two feather beds shall be sold and the money the fetch to be equally divided between my four children, Thomas Stembridge, Mary Stembridge, Martha Stembridge, and Elizabeth Stembridge.

Item: I give unto my daughter Mary Stembridge, nine pounds and ten schillings.

Item: I give unto my daughter Sally Stembridge, three pounds and ten schillings.

Item: It is my will and my desire that my land shall be sold after my decease, and other parts of my estate be sold to the highest bidder, and the money arising from the sale therof to be equally divided amongst my children.

I nominate and constitute and appoint my brother John Stembridge, and my son John Stembridge executors to this my last will and testament.

In witness thereof I have here onto set my hand, and seal, this 25th day of June, 1787. And delivered in presence
